Inflatable MRI Scanner

Following the success of an inflatable Philips MRI scanner being used at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in 2014, we were asked by Southampton University Hospital to create an inflatable life size replica of the new Siemens Aera scanner being installed in their paediatric ward in September 2016. The inflatable scanner will be used by babies and toddlers as a “practice run” for going into the real scanner, to make it less of a scary experience. We have also had interest from a New York based research institute who wants to use it for an older target group so we conducted weight tests, and we feel confident the scanner will take a payload of up to 80kgs.

Below the actual scanner, and the inflatable version.
